Avoid Boredom Over Break

Going home for the holidays is wonderful. You’ve just finished finals, and all you have to do is spend time with family, eat loads of food, and catch up on the sleep you’ve been missing out on while you were at college.
But truthfully, being home for break can be a bit boring. You can only watch the same movies with your little nephew or hit the mall so many times before you the sales ladies start to know you on a first name basis.
During the semester, college students are incredibly busy. We have classes, perhaps a part-time job, homework, and of course, social obligations. Then, over break, you are suddenly plopped back in your hometown without anything to really fill up your days. No wonder break can be a bit of a dull.
But worry no more. Here are some activities you can use to make your winter break more fun.
1. Go back and visit your high school teachers. High school wasn’t only about living for the weekend. It was also about learning something. Your teachers taught you everything you needed to know in order to get you into your dream college. Everyone has that one teacher who really affected them in high school. So go back and tell them how much they meant to you. Plus, it’s always fun to see how little those freshmen really are!
2. Call up your old friends. You two were inseparable before graduation; now she goes to UCLA and you are studying in New York. But you are both home for winter break so send her a text and get coffee together one morning. It’ll be great to catch up, swapping stories about the crazy things you have done in college. Maybe the two of you will end up spending a lot of time together over break, saving each other from the boredom of break.
3. Get a job. Sure, this isn’t exactly the most fun way to spend your break, but it will definitely take up some of your spare time. Just pick a place that has a fun atmosphere (i.e. that trendy new restaurant, running the projection wheels at a movie theatre, or pet-sitting for families who are out of town). Then, when you go back to school, everyone will wonder what you did to get Santa to give you a small fortune this year.
4. Take some classes. You could chip away at the classes you have to take next semester. Or you could take some personal fulfilling classes, such as a pottery class or physical fitness class at your local community college. Just do yourself a favor and make sure these classes don’t start at 8:00a.m. After all, it is break and you deserve to sleep in.
Hopefully these tips will help make your winter break more enjoyable.
Happy Holidays!
