Best Snacks for Your College Bowl Party

The college bowls are looming which translates to parties, parties and more football parties! Food is, undoubtedly, the single most important part of any college bowl party. Okay, perhaps it’s the second most important part- I suppose you need to make sure you have a TV first. Once that’s all figured out (which is something I really can’t help you with) start brainstorming because I’m telling you, good food equals a good party.
Here are a few of my favorite college football party food ideas:

  • Sandwiches are a lot of fun because you can either go with a make-your-own sandwich bar or buy one of those huge subs that you always see the pictures of at Subway.

  • Chili is warm, delicious, healthy (if you let it be!) and easy. Not to mention, it’s incredibly diverse! Chili recipes abound and you could even host a chili cook-off to weasel your friends into helping. Throw a slice of cornbread on top and you’re good to go!
  • Nachos are always a hit. They’re delicious and you can make them as simple (who can resist chips and cheese?) or as gourmet as you wish. Add lots of toppings for the biggest burst of flavor and impressive display.
  • Taco and burrito bars are super easy to throw together and you don’t have to worry about anyone not liking the food. If you provide plenty of options, there’s bound to be something for everyone.
  • Trail mix and mixed nuts are always fun munchies but try making your own so that you can control the amount of salt and added sugar that goes into it.
  • You can’t go wrong with the old stand-bys: burgers, hot dogs and steak.

Don’t forget to consider nutrition. I know nobody wants to think about weight gain at a party, but let’s be realistic: A night of drinking after a college bowl party can provide enough calories to last someone a week! When you’re planning the party-fare, consider the following:

  • Make your own ranch or french onion dips and substitute half plain greek yogurt for the mayonnaise or sour cream. Salsa and guacamole are other low-calorie dips that taste incredible.
  • Use reduced fat cheeses.
  • Buy baked potato chips, pita chips and veggies instead of classic potato chips.
  • Consider switching out traditional meat-dishes for tofu, chicken, ground turkey or bison meat.
  • Choose whole-grain options whenever possible.
  • Offer low-calorie beer and drink options.
