Best Winter Colleges

While January has some students dreading chapped lips and icy sidewalks, winter enthusiasts can’t wait to hit the slopes in these college towns.
Whether you like to ski or snowboard, these campuses come complete with their own winter wonderland.
University of Colorado (Boulder, Co.): This college presents some of the country’s best slopes. Eldora Mountain Resort is a mere 30-minute drive from campus, which boasts 53 trails and 12 lifts.
Montana State University(Bozeman, Mont.): Students in this college town spend their winter months making the most out of the cold weather.
“The winter recreation available to students around the Bozeman area ranges from downhill skiing, to Nordic skiing, to ice climbing, to backcountry skiing, to ice fishing, and I could go on and on,” said Tracy Ellig, a university spokesperson. “Within a 60 minute drive from town, there are three remarkable ski areas, [and] there’s a world-class, ice-climbing region that’s 40 minutes outside of town.”
Dartmouth College (Hanover, N.H.): One of the school’s long-standing traditions, called the annual Winter Carnival, is a complete celebration of snow. The weekend-long event hosts ski competitions, a student snow sculpture and a human dog sled race.
Sierra Nevada College (Incline Village, Nev.): Conveniently located near Tahoe Lake, the college has plenty of activities for winter enthusiasts to enjoy.
“Within an hour of campus, you’ve got 10 major ski areas,” said Tim Cohee, director of the ski business and resort management program at Sierra Nevada. “[And] not only is Tahoe a Mecca for skiing and snowboarding, but it’s also a winter resort. You happen to have the great fortune of being in the heartbeat of one of the biggest ski destinations in the United States—and that part is unique.”
University of Utah (Salt Lake City, Utah): This university just so happens to be located in the state which swanks the slogan: “The Greatest Snow on Earth.” The state talks big about its 14,000 acres of snowy terrain perfect for winter sports. Eleven of Utah’s resorts are located within an hour from campus, and a short 40-minute drive will get you to seven of the slopes.
