High School Summer Reading List

As you start cleaning out your lockers and spending a couple more hours at Starbucks studying for finals after school, you can’t help but update your Twitter account about how excited you are for the quickly approaching summer vacation.
But before you start planning your beach trips and afternoons basking in the sun, maybe you should stop by your local bookstore and check out their recommended list of summer reading.
Studies have shown that summer reading can boost academic performance by 50-67 percent in high school students, and that those students who don’t read over break tend to fall behind their peers in other subjects in addition to literature and language arts.
Here are some of the most recommend books for summer reading across the country:

  • The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey (Non Fiction): This book includes stories that engage the reader with cartoons and quotations to provide strategy, advice and hints for success in school, their careers and life.
  • How to Ditch Your Fairy by Justine Larbalestier (Fiction): Charlotte wants to exchange her fairy for a better one as readers will learn the lesson of being careful what you wish for.
  • The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (Humor, Science Fiction): After surviving Earth’s destruction, Arthur adventures into the galaxy, after enlisting the help of a tour guide Ford Perfect, on a mission to save the universe.
  • The Way We Work: Getting to Know the Amazing Human Body by David Macaulay with Richard Walker (Educational): An interesting, easy read about anatomy and physiology with an introduction to cellular biology and chemistry, along with a detailed account of the body’s integrating systems.
  • Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud (Fiction): This ever-propelling plot about Halli seeking revenge for his murdered uncle, which result in unintended consequences is a summer must-have.
