Out of This World Social Networking

The social networking site Twitter has been a way to keep individuals informed about pretty much anything. A posting on the site, or Tweet as it is called, can include anything and everything from your personal philosophy to your location. Normally, Tweets involving a person’s location are mundane, but in one particular instance, it was out of this world. For the first time in history, a social media site has moved from Earth to space.
Astronaut Mike Massimino, also known as Twitter user Astro_Mike, made the first ever Twitter Tweet while in orbit around the Earth. His posting on May 13, 2009 said this; “From Orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working heard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!” Since this initial orbital posting, Massimino has updated his Twitter page 3 other times. His messages are updating on both emotional and mission statuses.
Astronaut Massimino will continue updating his 288,105 followers as the mission continues. According to an interview Massimino gave to AI.com, he plans to post updates to this Twitter account throughout the entirety of the mission. This is the first time an astronaut has utilized a social networking site while in orbit, and by the looks of it, it won’t be the last time either.
