Regis Philbin's Education Background

Regis Francis Xavier Philbin was on born August 25, 1931 in the Van Nest section of The Bronx, New York. He’s the son of Francis “Frank,” a U.S. Marine and Filomena “Florence” Philbin.
Philbin attended Our Lady of Solace grammar school in the Bronx, In 1949 he graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School. Philbin graduated with a degree in sociology in 1953 from the University of Notre Dame. Later, Philbin served in the United States Navy as a Supply Officer.
Philbin worked a few jobs in television and radio before moving into broadcasting. Philbin is known for hosting talk and game shows from the 1960s to the present.
His first talk show was The Regis Philbin Show. For budget reasons, he had no writing staff, causing him to begin each show with what has become his hallmark, the “host chat” segments.
Philbin’s first national exposure came in 1967. He was Joey Bishop’s sidekick on The Joey Bishop Show. The popular show ran from 1967–1969. Throughout the following years, Philbin continued hosting multiple shows. In June 1985 Philbin was paired with Kathie Lee Johnson (later Gifford). The talk show show became nationally syndicated in September 1988 as Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. The talk show has incredibly high ratings year after year. Gifford left the show in 2000.
While Philbin searched for a new full time co-host he still had a very successful show. Philbin won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2001 for “Outstanding Talk Show Host.”
Also in 2001, Kelly Ripa was chosen as the permanent co-host, and the show was renamed Live with Regis and Kelly. The hosting duo became successful and the show continues to earn high ratings. In 2008, Philbin’s contract with ABC was renewed through to 2011. Philbin’s new contract reportedly earns him more than $21 million. In 2010 Philbin announced his plans to retire from Live with Regis and Kelly in November 2011.
