Here are some fun spring break trivia facts:

• The first official spring break event was actually a swim-meet for 300 students held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
• By 1985, MTV had been banned, as well as alcohol, on the beaches of Fort Lauderdale, Florida as a result of inappropriate behavior by spring breakers.
• Today, about 500,000 students head to Panama City Beach, occupying 18,000 hotel rooms to party on the beach and corporate sponsors such as Victoria Secret PINK, The U.S. Army, Banana Boat, Maxim Magazine, Geico and XBOX hold contests, endorse giveaways, and arrange activities for the college students each year.
• Students spend more than $1 billion during their spring breaks.
• Survey results showed that 50 percent of those in attendance had random or unplanned sexual encounters and 60 percent of those relations were unprotected.
• 60 percent of students were arrested or were confronted by police for their inappropriate behavior and another 60 percent had self-inflicted injuries as a result of poor decision-making whether sober or under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Speaking from experience, spring break in the recent decade has not become a raging week of sex, alcohol and rock and roll. Alternative spring break programs allow students the unique opportunity to volunteer across America or abroad, and are getting increasingly popular. Additionally, most kids embarking on spring break are just looking for a relaxing week of wholesome fun, sun and maybe a couple pina coladas.
