The Best Oktoberfest Celebrations in the U.S.

Ask almost any college student what their favorite type of beer is, and you are likely to get a long babble about a particular brand or style and how this beer is the best beer in the world. However, we college students don’t know squat about beer compared to the Germans.
In Germany, there is a 16-day long festival devoted to beers, drinking beer, singing songs about beer, and just about any other beer-related activity you can think of. What is this fantastic beer-belly-inducing celebration called? Oktoberfest!
The original Oktoberfest is held in Munich, Germany every September. It is also the world’s largest fair, with around six million people attending every year. This year is the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest, and the celebrations will start on September 18 and last until October 4, 2010.
If you cannot hop on a plane headed for Munich this year, don’t worry. There are plenty of Oktoberfest celebrations happening right here in the U.S.
1. Columbus, Ohio. “Oktoberfest in Ohio” is host to a huge concert series, an artisan marketplace, plenty of beer and bratwurst, and so much more. Where do these festivities take place? How about in a 223-acre German village that is dedicated to celebrating Oktoberfest? Sounds pretty awesome to me!
2. Tulsa, Oklahoma. If you are not 21 or do not like the taste of beer, then this is the place for you because Tulsa is known primarily for its delicious German food, and not necessarily its booze. The city also imports several bands from Germany each year, so you can dance the night away.
3. Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the nation’s largest Oktoberfest gathering. Around 500,000 people come to Cincinnati every year to participate in the world’s largest chicken dance, listen to live music, and tour the beer gardens set up for the festival. If you want a less-traditional Oktoberfest experience, this might be the place for you.
4. Big Bear Lake, California. This city really goes all-out for Oktoberfest, transforming the town into a quaint, German hamlet. Like most Oktoberfest celebrations, there is plenty of beer, food, music, and fun in Big Bear Lake, California.
5. Denver, Colorado. For 36 years, Denver has been celebrating its German heritage with two weekends devoted to fun, food, and beer. Some entertaining events that occur every year include a keg roll and a Sea of Accordions Concert.
