The Dangers of Sharing Too Much Personal Information Online

We all know that you need to be careful about what you put up on Facebook. Those drunken pictures from last weekend might come back to bite you when a future employer is doing a background check on you. But what about sending information to your friends? Turns out, that might not be the best idea either.
Karen Owen graduated from Duke University in 2010. She recently compiled a 42-slide Powerpoint presentation titled “An Education Beyond the Classroom: Excelling in the Realm of Horizontal Academics.” In this presentation, Owen gives detailed accounts of 13 Duke athletes she had been sexually involved with. She ranks each guy, according to their physiques, sexual prowess, and other factors.

Owen claims she never meant for the video to go viral. She only wanted to share the document with some friends. However, in today’s technological age, it is safe to assume that anything you share with one person could be shared with the entire world. If you are planning to send a document to friends, post pictures to Facebook, or write a blog that could come back to haunt you in the future if it gets into the wrong hands, maybe you should think twice before hitting that “submit” button.
Another lesson we can learn from Owen’s presentation: college students are having sex. Trojan Condoms recently released it’s annual Sexual Health Report Card, which ranks the sexual education programs offered at various colleges. Although not everyone is having sex, many students are. If you are having sex, please be safe about it.
Also- don’t make a Powerpoint presentation about the men/women you have slept with. It’s just not a good idea.
