The Top 5 College Fight Songs

“Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, OK U!”
Okay, so my school’s fight song isn’t really creative, but it sure does get the crowd ready for a football game, especially when there are 80,000 fans singing it. Sadly enough, it turns out that the University of Oklahoma’s fight song was inspired by the songs that students sing at Yale University and the University of North Carolina, but hey, I still like it.
Almost every school has a fight song that students and fans sing at sporting events. These fight songs have two main purposes: get the home-team excited and intimidate the competition.
William Studweil and Bruce Schueneman are the co-authors of College Fight Song II, A Supplementary Anthology. After listening to hundreds of college fight songs, Studwell and Schueneman selected the top college fight songs based on several important factors, such as popularity, sound, emotional effects of the song, and energy.
Here are their top five college fight songs:

  1. Notre Dame Victory March” University of Notre Dame. They call this song “the best-known and perhaps the most-borrowed” college fight song.
  2. The Victors” University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. This song is the “most rousing and stunning; a very proud song.”
  3. On Wisconsin” University of Wisconsin – Madison. This song is a “smooth and much-borrowed old classic.”
  4. Down the Field” Yale University. Like Wisconsin’s song, this one is “another smooth and much-borrowed old classic.”
  5. Anchors Away” United States Naval Academy. This fight song is “very dynamic and uplifting.”
