Use Pimsleur to Master a Foreign Language

Do you want to learn a foreign language? Personally, I always wanted to learn Spanish. It took me four years in high school, three years in college, and 12 weeks studying abroad in Spanish-speaking countries to truly master the language. And although I do not regret my voyage to learn Spanish, I wish I had known about a quicker – and cheaper – method: The Pimsleur Method.
Dr. Paul Pimsleur created this method for learning a new language. Dr. Pimsleur discovered that if you are reminded of a new word or information repeatedly within a specific amount of time, you will memorize the word or information quicker and retain it for longer, causing long term recognition. Dr. Pimsleur analyzed his research, and discovered the exact time frames necessary to help any type of learner master a new language. (This seems a whole lot easier than shuffling through flashcards, cramming for vocabulary quizzes every week, if you ask me.)
So, how does this program work? Well, you can either get the iPhone app, or you can get a series of CDs and booklets from the website. Depending on which package you select, you can use the Pimsleur Method to become proficient in a foreign language or to just get a basic grasp of the language.
There are almost 50 languages available for English-speakers who want to learn a different language. There are also 14 “English as a Second Language” options, for those who want to learn English.
This is a cheaper way to learn a new language, especially if you compare it to each semester’s worth of classes in tuition. The iPhone apps are $4.99 each, but are limited to French, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. For all of the other languages Pimsleur offers, you will get to pick how many CDs and booklets you want. The basic beginners pack is $11.95 and includes one CD. The packages grow up to a comprehensive level, which include 16 CDs and booklet for $345.00, or the comprehensive plus level, which is 5 CDs for $115.00.
As a bilingual student, I think this would be a great, easy, and fast way to learn another language. Check out Pimsleur and decide for yourself!
