Society says that earning a degree is an investment into your future. But have you ever figured out the math on how much you actually profit from your degree?
After paying thousands of dollars over the course of three to five years, these majors result in a list of the worst paying jobs according to a study released by Payscale.
10. Drama: Starting annual salary: $35,600; mid-career annual salary: $56,600. However, you can always make it big and become a multi-millionaire actor or director.
9. Fine arts: Starting annual salary: $35,800; mid-career annual salary: $56,300.
8. Hospitality and tourism: Starting annual salary: $37,000; mid-career annual salary: $54,300. There are a lot of perks associated with the hospitality industry like discounted, or sometimes even free, hotel accommodations, airline flights and more, that allow for extensive travel.
7. Secondary education: Starting annual salary: $36,200; mid-career annual salary: $54,100. Teaching has been described as an immensely rewarding and noble career, and according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment opportunities for primary, secondary, and special education teachers are expected to grow by 14 percent in the coming decade.
6. Horticulture: Starting annual salary: $37,200; mid-career annual salary: $53,400. The pay may not be great, but if you love nature and the study of the earth’s habitat, given the Green Movement, digging in the dirt might be just the rewarding career path for you.
5. Spanish: Starting annual salary: $35,600; mid-career annual salary: $52,600. The need for those who speak Spanish and English will continue to rise. So while the pay may not be six figures, your skills might be in hot-demand.
4. Music: Starting annual salary: $34,000; mid-career annual salary: $52,000. Music is no different from any artistic career; the money earned won’t put you in the company of Donald Trump’s bank account, but the creativity and satisfication received from doing what you love to do makes your paycheck feel like a sweet bonus.
3. Theology: Starting annual salary: $34,800; mid-career annual salary: $51,500. While many theology majors say that their professional pursuit is from that of a higher calling, one perk is that many times housing and cost of living are provided from the religious establishment they work for.
